The image supplied for this cover is a 19th Century corset ad illustrating the ways in which the Mikado craze was used to sell just about anything. The client requested at least one version using period typography and keeping the names at the bottom.

This cover is in process. The Chinese volume is next in the series and the art was provided by the publisher. Upon seeing the bottom three sketches, the client liked black and red sketch & the emphasis on the main word (Chinese) but asked for slightly more emphasis on the second half of the title and a different color scheme. The top two sketches are currently under consideration and include the spine.

Spring Visits by Don Unrau / photography monograph

I was contacted a year or so ago by the author/photographer of this book, who planned to self-publish. He wanted a very simple, classic photography monograph with very high-quality reproduction. The book was just completed by Artron Printing in China, with prepress by iocolor of Seattle. It is a stunning example of tritone stochastic printing. Here are some samples of the work. The book will be out this summer.

National Hispanic Cultural Center, MesoAmericanics exhibition catalog

I recently completed this catalog for the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Early in the design process, we asked the artists if they had any images of their creative process. They sent a selection of snapshots. It was great fun pairing the photographs with the final pieces. The finished catalog is 24 pages and bound with rivets. The title logo was created by the exhibition designer, Michele Carter, whose work preceded my work on the catalog. I was delighted to be able to use her brilliant solution to the title in the catalog design. The catalog was color proofed and printed by O'Neil Printing in Phoenix, Arizona, who did a masterful job and were a pleasure to work with. Roswell Bookbinding (also in Phoenix) gave me many great ideas for the binding, and, in the end, finished the book beautifully with rivets.

Upon seeing the proposed covers, the author requested that something modern be used and he sent this image (which is not featured in the book). The author and the Press had been happy with the typography of one of the previous comps, so I modified that only slightly. This comp was approved by all.

Very few of the images in this book were of good enough quality for a cover. These are two I selected from the possible options. The Press chose the comp in color with the blue-black panel at the bottom.

University of Iowa Press, interior layouts & cover comps

I added thumbnail versions of the images in the front matter and throughout the text. Each thumbnail is accompanied by a short informational caption. The Press chose the cover comp with the Iris Petal for the final cover.
