The image supplied for this cover is a 19th Century corset ad illustrating the ways in which the Mikado craze was used to sell just about anything. The client requested at least one version using period typography and keeping the names at the bottom.
This cover is in process. The Chinese volume is next in the series and the art was provided by the publisher. Upon seeing the bottom three sketches, the client liked black and red sketch & the emphasis on the main word (Chinese) but asked for slightly more emphasis on the second half of the title and a different color scheme. The top two sketches are currently under consideration and include the spine.
My first book design was set in hot metal. Learning with metal type taught me to appreciate the art of fine book typography.
I specialize in fine art and photography books, illustrated books, scholarly monographs, and trade fiction and non-fiction. I am fortunate to be able to combine my two creative passions, design and photography, in the art of bookmaking.
The photograph above was inspired by my six-year-old daughter, who collected the flower buds, and reminds me every day to keep seeing the beauty in simple things.
